Red flags when it comes to your babies sleep

Before looking at how we can improve or make changes to our bubs sleep habits, we always need to address any potential red flags!
What are red flags?
We use the term ‘red flags’ to identify the behavioral or developmental markers suggesting the need for further evaluation. When it comes to sleep, red flags are generally to do with:
  • Feeding
    • If you are concerned about any potential feeding issues, think about seeing a board certified lactation consultant
  • Allergies/intolerances
    • If you are concerned about allergies or intolerances, talk to your GP about possibly linking in with a naturopath or allergist.
  • Airways
    • If you are concerned about your babies breathing or airways whilst they sleep, see your GP and talk about possible referral to ENT. (things to look for are: open mouth breathing, snoring, sleeping with neck hyperextended and bum in the air, sleeping with head tipped far backwards)
Without addressing or identifying any potential red flags, we recommend to hold off on commencing any kind of ‘sleep training’ or implementing any settling techniques.
If your gut is telling you there is something more sinister going on than your baby just being overtired or just not wanting to go to sleep, follow that gut and see a healthcare professional.
At the Sleep Teacher, we’ll always endeavor to ask you the right questions to ensure we are able to identify any potential red flags and where we see the possibility, we will communicate that with you before offering any advice on sleep!
