A Day in the Life of a Newborn: What to Expect and How to Navigate It

Welcoming a newborn into your life is an exciting and joyous occasion, but it can also be overwhelming, especially if you're unsure of what to expect. From feeding to sleeping to cuddling, every moment with your newborn is precious and filled with learning opportunities. Let's take a closer look at what a day in the life of a newborn looks like, so you can feel more prepared and confident as you embark on this incredible journey of parenthood.

Sleeping:

Newborns spend a significant portion of their day sleeping, typically around 14-17 hours. However, the duration of each sleep session can vary depending on the baby's needs and hunger levels. It's essential to pay attention to your baby's cues and establish a gentle routine that accommodates their sleep patterns. Remember, flexibility is key, as sleep patterns can change regularly, especially during the newborn phase.

Feeding:

Feeding is another fundamental aspect of caring for your newborn. Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed, expect to feed your baby roughly 8-12 times within a 24-hour period. Some feeding sessions may last up to an hour, and it's perfectly normal for feeding to transition seamlessly into your baby's sleep time. Despite what people say, it is okay to feed your baby to sleep.

Cuddling and Playing:

Contrary to popular belief, cuddling and playing with your newborn is not only enjoyable but also essential for their growth and development. Simple activities such as smiling, talking, singing, and making faces can stimulate your baby's senses and foster bonding. Introducing supervised tummy time is also beneficial, as it helps strengthen your baby's muscles and improve their motor skills.

Crying:

While it may be distressing to hear your newborn cry, it's essential to remember that crying is their primary means of communication. Your baby may cry when they're hungry, tired, uncomfortable, or in need of comfort. Be patient and attentive to their needs, whenever they need it.

A Day in the Life:

For newborns, awake times typically range from 30-45 minutes and then closer to 90mins for a 12 week old. During this time, you can engage in various activities such as feeding, burping, nappy changes, playing (eye contact, signing etc.), and incorporating tummy time.

It's so important to be patient with your baby during this period. Remember, your newborn is experiencing a while new world and as long as you're there to provide love, warmth, safety and attention you're doing great.
